I didn’t get to sleep until 2am because I drew up a pattern for this wee bugger at quarter to 12 last night and had to follow through. I love the earthy, mycological colour combination of cream, taupe, and browns, outlined with the chicken-scratch thin dark brown thread. If I could make a set of three different types of fungi brooches, I’d be happy, preferably with a cornsilk yellow felt from Myriad. I’ll be devising while I’m at work.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 265px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S8Sa6L4TVUI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/tBvgUFgwav0/s320/Picture+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459658972691912002" />

A couple things I've been experimenting....

It's taken me a while, but I pushed myself to return to my Russian doll idea. This time, instead of a three piece felt family, I made one fine lady out of mixed fabrics and roosted her atop of my loose toilet paper roll.

I had this beautiful vintage Scandinavian cotton duck fabric I bought off Etsy a few months ago, and finally found the perfect usage for it. Lucky for me, the pattern suited the style I was going. I love how the black pinking shearish stripe runs down her front, to me, it looks like the embroidered opening of a jacket. The black velvety upholstery fabric [found for 99p at a charity shop btw, sweet] really illuminates the bright red of the ric rac. The pom pom trim was very necessary, I don't care what others may thing. Pom pom trim is ALWAYS necessary. Her face is embroidered with brown polyester thread on calico and I applied a wee dust of rose blush to her cheeks for good measure.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S8N7ZZqRJGI/AAAAAAAAAQk/e_bgPz8rbkE/s320/russiandolltoiletpapercozy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459342849618289762" />

When I was in the fabric store in the city centre yesterday getting supplies, red and white polka dot fleece caught my eye. I ended up spending £35 on fabric but it was well worth it. I had to take a lovely saunter to the park because it was a unexpectedly brilliant sunny day. It's a rare thing here, so catching rays becomes a priority. When I returned to the flat, i sewed up this number...a toadstool plush. I was delighted with my brooch and figured a good ol' big brother should be made. It's made completely from fleece and packed so tightly with wadding that it's very solid, but cushy. I'm puttin' it up in the shop too.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S8N8xaYQzZI/AAAAAAAAAQs/OUwNXzfa0bk/s320/shroom+plsuh.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459344361639693714" />

Adipose dude

I've never watched Dr. Who in my life, but I might be missing out on some of the brilliant villains such as these guys, the Adipose. So when I got up I immediately made this 'shroomie with some of my ultra awesome polka dot felt I had bought on my birthday. I'm really chuffed with the little delicate detail on the underbelly , it makes it a bit cartoony yet realistic. I'd love to make a whole range of different types of mushroom brooches, but I may be getting ahead of myself.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S6uqmxfteEI/AAAAAAAAAQI/VInmgZIXjR4/s320/shroombroochfront.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452639356960208962" />

This chap is lightly stuffed with polyfill and has a bar brooch on the backside. He stands about 3 1/2 inches tall, so he's just small enough to be comfortable on a coat or bag, but large enough to stand out and make a statement. I was thinking of goggly eyes [I'm always thinking of goggly eyes], but I kinda like him just the way he is. I think I'm going to add him to the sellin' pile that I'll be putting up this weekend.

Fair-Weather House

I’m a huge fan of Hannah Kopacz of Made with Love By Hannah fame [I should be, I own nine of her cute A-Line skirts and two sweet shirts], and my latest craft I’ve whipped up last night really made me think of her. I remember the cuckoo clock that we had acquired after my grandfather passed away years ago, which my parents gave to my uncle [much to my dismay, but I suppose he grew up with it]. But the item that especially sticks with me is the sun bleached weather house they had on the windowsill over their kitchen sink. Out of all the beautiful old furniture and nifty little odds and ends that had accumulated in my grandparent’s house for years it was the cheap old dusty weather house that my father HAD to have.

I always thought it was so magical yet simple. If it’s sunny, out comes that lady. If it’s rainy out come the man. Brilliant! After a couple years of it at my parents place, my little nephew accidentally broke it. But it was as though my parents needed to have one in the kitchen, to carry on the tradition. And to be honest, the kitchen did feel a bit empty without it. They found one at Canadian Tire for like five bucks. The older one was packed away for safe keeping, and the new one sat gleaming, fresh and new, on the windowsill. They now give weather houses to friends and family who are difficult to buy for. A very interesting gift I think!

There are dozens of charity shops in my neighbourhood in Glasgow. I frequent them at least once every week or two in hopes of finding some good bargains and keepsakes [I usually do]. A couple years ago, I found a weather house for £1. It’s broken of course, and really old and dirty, bits missing. But I had to save it. It’s like, in my blood to have a weather house. It now sits on my mantle piece.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S6UhI_PdddI/AAAAAAAAAQA/TU7DgC57SZs/s320/weatherhouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450799362300802514" />

I’ve wanted to do something weather house themed for a little while now, but could never think of any cool ideas. I’m not sure how ‘cool’ this wall hanging is, but it certainly makes me smile. I couldn’t stop once I started last night, and was absolutely stumped on how I’d make the people so tiny out of felt…until I remembered the amazing weaved folk trim I had bought off etsy ages ago. They fit so perfectly!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S6UgDl_GdJI/AAAAAAAAAPw/DFcKkcpKgc4/s320/scandinaviantrim.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450798170110325906" />

I also used some cute Scandinavian inspired trim my friend gave me, vintage plastic deer things I bought from etsy, and wooden toadstools I bought from the dollar store when I visited Canada last year. I'll be putting them up in the shop shortly, along with the masses of other projects I'm nearly finishing.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5bP_eigOOI/AAAAAAAAAMo/UR0boYVLJmw/s320/pugkeyring.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446769488787683554" />

B-day Goodies

It was my birthday a couple days ago and I don't think I've ever had so many crafty-based gifts.

I've been obsessed with Toilet Paper Cozies with the plastic dolls in them for a few months. I finally got around to buying some of the plastic dolls [and let me just say, that in the UK, it is nearly impossible to get these things]. There are so many American sites offering 7" dolls, and even plastic dolls with those funny tube for legs made specifically to fit in toilet paper rolls. The shipping price is too ridiculous though, and I found these cuties for a bargain on ebay.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5YrE9fwNSI/AAAAAAAAAK4/Qf4NltMUHZ4/s320/plasticgals1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446588163578410274" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 256px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5YrT--n0CI/AAAAAAAAALA/AHPtXmRzZyg/s320/plasticgals3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446588421674356770" />

Anyway, my pal bought me a toilet paper cozy doll from a fantastic designer on Ebay who lives in northern Scotland. She had ordered it two days before my birthday and she made it, packaged and sent right to my pal's house just in time for the birthday bash at Curlers. She is so cute, I had to name her Clementine, and she now survey's the living room atop of my shelf. She's also the same type of doll I had ordered, I must remember to email the lady who makes these and ask her where she get her supply from.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5abwf2wUDI/AAAAAAAAAL4/yz1VeS5heuI/s320/toiletdoll.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446712056838377522" />
My husbands parents came down and gave me some cards and gifts from the family.

I got this rocking Clothes Kits Bag design that Im itching to sew up [I love the black on red].

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5aa5-tophI/AAAAAAAAALo/pseYlYDrEV0/s320/clothkits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446711120228820498" />

My husband and I watched that amazing Totoro film a couple months ago, and I nearly fainted when I saw the wonderful Cat Bus. We also went into the 'toon and he bought me a knitting loom [amazing!] and pom pom lace stuff, and ric rac, ric rac, ric rac. I have ric rac coming out my ears now! I'm waiting for a delivery of jumbo stuff too!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5acV6LBigI/AAAAAAAAAMA/-oaWrUzGAkM/s320/loom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446712699557874178" />

Check out these darling gnome decals Kris also got me. Ugh, I have too many projects on the go.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5abafl971I/AAAAAAAAALw/YPrvVvY3NL4/s320/chicks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446711678810845010" />

My new pal and co-worker Anna even whipped me up one of her amazing bird brooches.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 263px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5bNp1XNAwI/AAAAAAAAAMg/6OHkwFUyg04/s320/annapin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446766917933925122" />

She is a jewelry designer and has some brilliant wares in different shops ad galleries in Glasgow and Edinburgh, check her out at Kath Libbert Jewellery and Precious-Eastcoast

And finally...my Sindy toilet. Yep...that's a genuine 1970's gem right there. The brown and mustard screams that decade and I love the 'Sindy' in cursive as if it's the name of the toilet company, classic. The little matt that wraps around the seat is just as raggedy as a full sized one would be. One of my little plastic babes tested it out today while I was at work. She should be ashamed of herself!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5bIvzcYvII/AAAAAAAAAMQ/Mv4BX5W-Y9Y/s320/flush!.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446761522939870338" />

I will have to make a miniature toilet paper cozy to sit on top of it, as well as maybe a shag seat cover, but that brown is really too sweet to cover up, don't you think? I wish this was my real toilet...or an avocado version...or even a pastel blue. We had a light yellow one with matching tub and sink back at my old home. Having to live with a pure white one is just not as much fun.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S5bI45YVyQI/AAAAAAAAAMY/f8FUdzDvNko/s320/flush2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446761679152335106" />

Wee Gnome Cottage

Ive been trawling through pictures on the computer, trying to find images of things Ive been making the past while. I stumbled across this Wee Cottage I made for my pal Kris for Christmas this year [how Ive forgotten about it in such a short period of time scares me a bit]. She and I went to York back in November and we got these darling little rubber gnomes from a place called Give a Dog a Bone, a great little gift shop full of weird and wonderful merchandise. We also nipped over to the insanely gorgeous dollhouse shop, Miniature Scene, that completely hypnotized us with 1:12 scale versions of daily items.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S4zteKDimMI/AAAAAAAAAJw/w_AlHpEoh9g/s320/3011365738_8331869239.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443987151935150274" />

So, she bought some items for her homeless gnome, and it was then and there that I decided I was going to build her little guy a cottage to stay in. I constructed the house from this heavy cardboard we get at the library when books are delivered [working in the library has its advantages], and some felt. The window is made from plastic packaging of an eraser set [it's as though it was meant to be a gnome cottage window].

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S4zuUnhzgRI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/aXCAAXf6iEw/s320/wee+cottage4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443988087559651602" />

I'm obviously obsessed with York and it's well preserved Medieval/Tutor architecture. I incorporated the 'beams' into the gnome's house. I think they make a cozy atmosphere. I took a lot of inspiration from a place in York called Barley Hall, a medieval townhouse situated down a long, narrow snickleway. I am slammed with inspiration from all over the place, itching to craft when its bedtime and piecing together projects in my head as I rearrange books at work. So I’ve been toiling away on some different projects here and there, whether it’s trying out projects from books or working out my own ideas.

Yarn Squid Brooches

I recently bought The Craftster Guide to Nifty, Thrifty, and Kitschy Crafts: Fifty Fabulous Projects from the Fifties and Sixties by Leah Kramer , which I wanted forever, and fell in love with the Merry Monsters project. There is a small image of the original yarn man a1960s craft book beside the instructions. I don’t ever remember seeing them in my Grans, but they look oddly familiar and I automatically warmed to the idea. I thought they’d be cute on a piece of clothing and made my versions into brooches for my bag, change the face a bit, and added a darling little gingham bowtie and teeny button.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S4ro0yy1ooI/AAAAAAAAAIo/Oktv31OgMuI/s320/yarnsquid60sstyle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443419093316510338" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dm6UsEpeHRE/S4rpEfSBdRI/AAAAAAAAAIw/FaAjqemKVC4/s320/yarnsquidbroochesfullbag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443419362956506386" />

Stockhausen Pughausen loves Hamburgers

There is a picture of a Pug in a tuxedo someplace on the Internet that I saved as my background picture. One of them is being able to see Norse influence daily. I find Norse/Viking history in Scotland really fascinating and was inspired to make this little trooper after a visit from York one day. Sewing and embroidering the wee beard was too enjoyable. I love the massive wooden button and how the helmut fits snugly over his head. I named him Njal [after Njal's Saga] and he will have a boat soon. I've also created even teenier versions of Njal and his buds that are nearly finished. Im nut sure what I can do with them, I was thinking of attaching a string to their heads...wee ornaments? Clearly too early for Christmas though.

<img style="display:block; This kitchen is amazing. I love how it's homey and inviting, the orange and browns make it so comforting and warm.It's just asking for a large troop of 80s teens to come in and eat pizza. I hate these stainless steel bleak and cold kitchens I see in the Ikea catalogues. To me a kitchen should be livable not stark. I grew up in a very 80s kicthen [the dark wood cupboards and crazy patterend floor]. I spent hours in there, reading my masses of Archie comics while eating cereal, talking for hours on the phone to my friend, and cutting and gluing whatever craft needed to be cutted and glued. Sadly that kicthen is gone, the house sold, and my parents [though ive moved out and am 4000 miles away] have designed a fancy modern kitchen. I suppsoe i'll always have a soft spot for older dark and cluttered kicthens.

Glasgow Craft Mafia Winter Market, Hillhead Library

Hey, hey,

Catch a great gift shopping opportunity tomorrow !!!
